Don’t let telemarketers fool you

BBB of Northern Indiana received a call from Workers for the Blind. One of their members reported having received a call from a supposed representative of Workers for the Blind asking for donations. Wisely, the member contacted Workers for the Blind checking to see if a collection is, indeed, going on. There is not.

“This consumer did the right thing by contacting the legitimate organization who was supposedly asking for a donation and checking with them,” said Michael Coil, President/CEO of the BBB of Northern Indiana. “Fraudsters will often use the name of legitimate companies or organizations to get to consumers. We recommend you always check with the company or organization first before giving a credit card number, bank account number, or any form of payment that could potentially do major damage to your good name.”

Coil warns that, unfortunately, BBB is seeing a sharp spike in scams in a variety of areas. “The best way to thwart a scam is to be diligent and never give information to someone until you are absolutely sure it is on the up and up. Don’t take the caller’s word. Due diligence pays off.”
